Lights, camera, action: María Andrea Beltrán (cerebral palsy, Colombia) has dreamed of being a writer for as long as she can remember. When she began studying literature at the best university in Colombia, she made a great discovery when she enrolled in a class called “multimedia”: that her real passion is film. This was a turning point in her career, as she found audiovisual editing gave her the same sensation as writing. “It was an incredible experience. I’d never felt anything like it in my life. It was like another level. The more time I spent in front of the screen, the freer I felt. I discovered I could write stories and share them on the big screen.”

When she finished her degree, she decided to study audiovisual production at Global College. She was concerned about carrying out this challenge because of the difficulty of getting around in a wheelchair. And this is how she learned of our handbikes, which gave her the freedom necessary to dare to study far from home and discover the world with her Batec handbike. She also used it on her travels to Costa Rica and Panama, which she told us about at the time on this blog. However, the experience could be described as bittersweet. Because of her disability, it was very difficult for her to endure the demanding school schedule and living so far from home was an uphill battle. She says that if it hadn’t been for her BATEC ELECTRIC, she wouldn’t have survived. She dropped out of school and, when she was starting to think film wasn’t for her, she was offered two opportunities that pushed her to continue reaching for her dreams. First, a trip to Nicaragua with a local NGO, where she found inspiration again and, second, when she found work as an editing assistant at a studio in Miami. “I wanted to jump for joy in my wheelchair.” There she started using all sorts of multimedia software, but also became interested in the production chain behind an audiovisual piece. Now clear that film is her thing, she went back to Global College and, when she finished her studies there, looked for film schools in the United States. “It was the best option taking into account accessibility, acceptance of disabilities and favourable laws compared to Colombia”. While waiting for a response from the universities, she has decided to launch a crowdfunding campaign to direct her first short film. She calls it Colors and explains all about the project in this video.

Colors tells the story of two artists reunited in a magical setting full of incredible landscapes and smells. But most of all colours. We can't say any more without giving away the ending but it is clearly a very moving story. “I’d like to take Colors a long way, not just to open the doors to the university but also to film festivals around the world. But above all I’d like people to know that there are still people who love their homeland, their roots, their landscapes and their people and who, despite the social problems and bad reputation in the media, are proud of being from Colombia.”

If you’d like to help make María’s dream come true, just go to the official website of the Colors project and make a donation. And then share it with your friends and contacts.

Plus, María’s box of surprises also includes fighting to make sure that being a woman and having a physical disability isn't an impediment to working in film. Despite the obvious difficulties facing a person in a wheelchair when on a technical production team, María has dreamed up a technical aide that will make her Batec handbike into a video stabiliser to allow her to shoot tracking shots with loads of movement for her future projects. Because Colors is just the first of many to come.
