Marta is an architect and is currently doing a PHD in universal design in international cotutelle between the UPC (Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya) and TUT (Tampere University of Technology) of Finland. Universal design, also known as “inclusive design” or “design for all”, stands for development of products and environments that are easily accessible for the greatest number of people possible without the need to adapt them or redesign them specially. Last year, Marta’s research led her to spend a year in Finland with a research contract at TUT.

“One of my greatest concerns about the challenge of living in Finland was the possibility of getting trapped every morning in a foot of snow”, she explains. So she equipped her BATEC ELECTRIC with a special studded covers for snow and ice and the result was wonderful. She also took studded wheels for her wheelchair but she didn’t actually end up using them “because it would have ruined the parquet flooring inside the buildings!” The ease of attachment and detachment of the BATEC ELECTRIC allowed Marta to use the BATEC ELECTRIC with studded wheels outdoors and her light wheelchair, with no studs, when indoors.

Although she took her car to Finland, Marta found a flat just opposite the university, so she moved about with her BATEC ELECTRIC almost all the time and was able to verify that it works very well with ice and hard snow.”
